Edible & Medicinal Landscape Designs

The following designs are created with permaculture/food forestry principals in mind.  The plants are edible and/or medicinal or useful as pollinators or nitrogen fixers.  The designs use annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees. The perennials, shrubs and trees are all hardy to our climate in Saskatchewan.  The annuals are easily grown from seed or can be commonly found as started plants in greenhouses.  The designs come laminated with a plant list and key as well as installation directions and suggestions.

There are 4 different options available for purchase:

1. Design with Plant list/key

2. Design/Key with 45 minute Consultation

3. Design/Key with 45 minute Consultation and Seed bundle

4. Design/Key with Seed bundle

Depending on the design and availability, the seed bundle contains seeds for most or all of the annual plants and some seeds of the perennials.

Choose your Own Adventure Garden

I am very excited about this design. There are a couple different plant options for each symbol on the plan, you can choose from medicinal or edible plants depending on your interests. This plan features your choice of a Goji, Plum, or Apple as the anchor of the plan ("A").  Some of the other plant options are Echinacea, St. John's wort, Giant Hyssop, Currant, Haskaps, etc. There is even a patch for either Garlic or your annual herbs of choice (Basil, Rosemary, etc.)

The scale of this design is 1 inch = 4 feet or each square is 1 square foot.

Complete Herb Garden

This design is divided into Medicinal and Culinary herbs.   Both areas have both annual and perennial plants although there are mostly perennials on the Medicinal side and mostly annuals on the Culinary side.  This is just the nature of the climate we live in.  The medicinal side includes plants such as Valerian, Yarrow, Lemon Balm, Chamomile, and Scullcap.  The culinary side includes plants such as Dill, Basil, Oregano and Chives.                  The scale of this design is 1 inch = 4 feet or each square is 1 square foot.

Round Food Forest

This is a design for a larger area.   The design includes a sitting area in the middle under the feature tree (an Apple or Plum), with three paths leading up to it.   The design includes shrubs, perennials and annuals.  If you prefer to have it only perennials then the annuals could easily be replaced by perennials of similar size.  Some of the plants included in this design are Juliet Sour Cherry, Northline Saskatoon, Oregano, Thyme, Lovage, Comfrey, Arnica, and Asparagus.

The scale of this design is 1 inch = 8 feet or

each square is 2 square feet.

Large Food Forest

This is also a larger design for a back or front yard.   I envision it to be planted along a garage, house or fence(s).   I have given 2-3 options for each symbol in this design so you can 'choose your own adventure'.  The design features two larger trees (A & B)- which could be 2 Pears of different species, or a Hawthorn and a Plum or a couple Apples depending on your preference.  Some of the other plant options in this design are Saskatoon, 'Tecumseh' Plum, Weeping Standard Caragana, Dill, False Indigo, Lady's Mantle, Hosta, St. John's wort, Arnica, Lupine, Bee Balm, Ostrich ferns, Highbush Cranberry, etc.

Each plant is edible, medicinal, nitrogen fixing or a pollinator.

The scale of this design is 1 inch = 4 feet or

each square is 1 square foot.

Mini Food Forest

This is a smaller design for a back or front yard.   I envision it to be planted along a garage, house or fence(s).  This design features an Apple tree (A)-   Some of the other plant options in this design are Haskap, Nanking Cherry, Bee Balm,

Strawberries, Daylily, etc.

The scale of this design is 1 inch = 4 feet or

each square is 1 square foot.
